I had my 35 week appointment yesterday, which came with an ultrasound. She estimated the baby to be 6 lbs., 12 oz. Well, that's a normal-sized baby, right? Oh yeah, but I am only 35 weeks today!
I looked at the ultrasound tech and said, "And how much do babies gain in the last weeks of pregnancy? About half a pound?" She said, "Yep, we are looking at an over 9 lb. baby!" Right now the baby is in the 93rd percentile.
Hmmm. I am just surprised. I have felt smaller this pregnancy, so I was expecting a smaller baby (Alex was 8 lbs., 5 oz.). But really, my feeling wasn't based on anything scientific. It was based on the fact that no one has asked me this pregnancy if I am having twins! I took that as a good sign.
Keep in mind, the ultrasound estimates can be wrong UP TO TWO POUNDS! Most babies are in the 5.5-9.5 pound range, so it seems like they can't really be wrong. I mean, they are always wrong, but within the correct boundaries. I guess it's similar to a weatherman. My SIL Kristin was told Kyla would be 8 pounds, and she didn't even clear six! And of course, we were told Alex would be 9 and a half.
Of course, this news didn't phase Kevin. "Good! I would much rather have a fat, healthy baby than a little skinny one!" The ultrasound tech and I just exchanged glances. Sure, if I wasn't the one pushing this baby out, I probably wouldn't care too much either!
